Airport runway on pillars

This runway is located in Madeira, Portugal. There are 180 pillars, each 70m high, there’s also a parking garage below it.

    @ bs-
No it isn’t too much. With a weight of 970,000lbs plus the velocity of the motion adding to the kinetic energy on landing. You need to have alot of support. Planes are heavy objects traveling at high speeds. This isn’t overkill by any means.

whats shocking is that the space underneath is so badly used. You could have put the whole airport under there.

I can definitely confirm it’s real, I grew up in Madeira, and me and my friends went under the runway when they hosted a fair there. They look even bigger when you’re close.

I went to Madiera, around 1983, before the runway was extended. The winds were strong that day and the pilot had warned us it would be a tricky landing. Nearing the runway the pilot suddenly pulled up and we flew around the island again. On the second attempt, we got over the runway and “thump” the plane was dumped down hard to make full use of the short runway!

    I survived.

The return flight took off with the minimum fuel allowed, and refueled in nearby Porto Santo which had a much longer runway.
At the time The plan to extend the runway was in place, but I have never been back, so I never knew until now if they built it.

Regardless of the post, please don’t respond with language like that, Not Fake, it’s childish, offensive and inflammatory. You wouldn’t talk to someone like that face to face…

the space below the runway can be used for hotels, shops, concerts, raves, parties, drinking whatever

looks cool below, the plane above, and the sea to your front ^_^
    great place to hang out

  28. on 08 Feb 2008 at 5:44 pm 28.Chet said …

About putting stuff below this… I don’t think, personally, I would want to be sitting somewhere in a hotel or airport, or anywhere, and hear the noise and vibrations of a plane landing on top of me. Not to mention the huge potential for disaster if a plane were to crash-land and dammage/destroy this structure. At least right now only some parked cars and some unlucky people going to/from those cars would be effected.

  29. on 09 Feb 2008 at 6:42 am 29.Brendan said …

I’d live underneath a fake/ photshopped runway anyday……I’d enjoy the thrill of the risk, never knowing if the next plane to land will be the one that is going to crash through the fake/photoshopped runway and crush you to death.

  30. on 09 Feb 2008 at 7:53 am 30.Lheckuo said …

    Hey!

I am portuguese and it’s true! I have been there!
Before that extension there was an accident because the runway was too short. And because the airport is very near to the sea and the nearest town (Madeira is a small island), this was the only solution!
But maybe I’m just dumb and it’s just photoshop…

    Bristol Dad:

I would talk like that to someone’s face if they said something that retarded. Just because you don’t like the words Not Fake uses doesn’t mean you can project your holier than thou B.S. onto him/her. Don’t like “bad” language, don’t use it. Don’t tell me, or Not Fake, or anyone else to not use it.

By the way, I find it offensive, childish, and inflammatory that you can’t capitalize proper nouns like Bristol. I find it offensive, childish, and inflammatory that you attempt to tell others how to speak. I find it offensive, childish, and inflammatory that you can’t properly use punctuation.

I expect that since you have offended me, you will change how you type?

    No?

    My point is made.

  32. on 11 Feb 2008 at 8:10 am 32.bristol dad said …

No, don’t think so silchan (silchan being your name should presumably need capitalising much as bristol does). Even in a morally relative world, 9 out of 10 people would see this as pretty clear: His language is offensive, he wouldn’t speak like that to someone face to face and if the rest of use don’t speak out, he’s going to keep doing it. Of course he does have the right of free speech, as do I.

Talk about a circular argument. The guy answers his own question, and then confirms it….He needs to return to the shallow end of the gene pool…

The end of his argument might have been a little weak but Silchan had a good point.
    Bristol Dad:
Stop trying to clean up the world!
Not everyone thinks it should be the way you do!
Kindly halt your lips from moving.

This is a very ugly structure, and a shameful destruction of a coastline. I can’t believe that the convenience to the local inhabitants of having a BIG facility which allows BIG planes to land actually outweighs the loss.

    Hey guys,

I just wanted to say Hizzoner was my brother, and that he killed himself recently over the attacks launched against him on this website. He really was a photoshop and airport design expert, which I know is a strange combination but he marched to the beat of a different drummer. The tragic thing is he went to Portugal to confirm whether you guys were telling the truth, it mattered that much to him, and when he saw the runway, he pulled out a knife and sat down on it. You guys win. R.I.P Hizzoner.
